Our Commitment to Sustainability & Community Impact
The Gili Islands are a paradise of turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, and rich cultural heritage. At Gili Islands Voyages, we recognize that we are not just operators in this paradise, but stewards of its future. As a core principle of the Juara Holding Group, our commitment to sustainability is a comprehensive, actionable framework that guides every decision we make. It is woven into the fabric of our luxury voyages and is a responsibility we share with every guest and partner.
Environmental Stewardship
Our primary goal is to leave the Gili Islands’ ecosystem healthier than we found it. We implement strict environmental policies across all our operations.
- Zero Single-Use Plastics: All our voyages are 100% free of single-use plastics. We provide guests with reusable water bottles, use glass containers for storage, and source provisions with minimal packaging.
- Coral Reef Conservation: We are active financial and operational partners with the Gili Eco Trust. A portion of every voyage fee is donated to their Biorock coral reef restoration projects. Our guides, trained by our sustainability advisor, educate guests on reef-safe practices and lead optional, hands-on coral planting activities.
- Responsible Waste Management: We enforce a strict ‘pack-in, pack-out’ policy for all waste. All garbage is segregated on board and transported back to the mainland for proper recycling and disposal at certified facilities in Lombok, far exceeding local standards.
- Carbon Offsetting Program: We calculate the carbon footprint of each voyage, including vessel fuel and ground transport. We then invest in verified carbon offset projects through a partnership with an Indonesian provider that focuses on reforestation in critical habitats within the archipelago.
- Sustainable Sourcing: Our on-board chefs prioritize sourcing ingredients from local organic farms in Lombok and sustainable fisheries, reducing food miles and supporting the local economy.
Community Empowerment
We believe that sustainable tourism must directly benefit the local communities who are the traditional guardians of this region. Our social initiatives are designed to create lasting positive impact.
- Local Employment & Development: We are committed to maximizing local employment. Over 80% of our vessel crew and on-the-ground staff are from Lombok and the Gili Islands. We invest in their professional development through language training, STCW safety certifications, and hospitality skills workshops.
- Supporting Traditional Crafts: We have established a direct partnership with the Sukarara Village Weaving Cooperative in Central Lombok. We facilitate respectful, non-transactional visits for our guests and provide a market for their authentic ‘songket’ textiles, ensuring 100% of the proceeds go directly to the artisans.
- Community Development Fund: We contribute to a community fund that supports educational and infrastructure projects in the villages our staff call home, such as improving sanitation facilities or providing school supplies.
- Cultural Preservation: Our itineraries are designed in consultation with local community leaders to ensure they are respectful and authentic. We promote experiences that celebrate Sasak culture, from traditional music to local cuisine, providing a platform for cultural exchange that is dignified and empowering.
Our commitment to sustainability is not a static policy but an evolving practice. We continuously seek new ways to minimize our impact and maximize our positive contribution, ensuring the Gili Islands remain a vibrant destination for generations to come. This commitment is a key criterion in our methodology for selecting partners.
